What is a Root Canal Procedure?

As people age, the idea of having a root canal procedure becomes less and less uncommon. In fact, it becomes something that many adults are familiar with; but that doesn't mean the procedure should be feared.

When a tooth is severely decayed and the pulp of the tooth becomes infected, root canal therapy can save the tooth and prevent further complications. And thanks to local anesthetics at the nerve level, root canal treatment is quite comfortable for patients.

We’ve all heard someone say, “I get my bad teeth from my mom’s side of the family,” or “I can thank my dad for my healthy smile,” but is it really all about your DNA?  How about good dental hygiene?  Dentists are always saying we get cavities from eating too many sweets or forgetting to brush and floss, but are they right?  Well, partially.  Here’s why:

Why Use a Sonic Toothbrush?

If your dental checkups are less than stellar and your teeth seem to accumulate plaque too quickly, it might be a good idea to switch to a sonic toothbrush. While many dentists will emphasize frequent brushing and flossing, it really does matter which kind of brush you use. A lot of dentists will recommend sonic toothbrushes to their clients, claiming that they’re much better than a standard toothbrush. Certainly all the advertising would have you think this is true, and if that doesn’t convince you, maybe the price will (between $80 and $150). But are these electronic toothbrushes really better?

For the past 150 years, amalgam fillings were used to treat dental cavities.

Over time, however, concern about the safety of amalgam has increased. Each amalgam filling contains trace amounts of mercury, silver, tin, zinc, and copper; of all the metals used to make the fillings, mercury is used for at least 50% of the formula.

Although the FDA has stated that these filings are suitable for anyone over 6 years of age, there are many who believe amalgam fillings are detrimental to their wellbeing.

As a Colorado Springs holistic dentist, we believe it’s important to be educated about the long-term side effects of today’s dental procedures.

Keep reading to find the top reasons for removing amalgam, and which alternative fillings you can use instead.
